This is disturbing, but, it must be remembered, everyday reality, especially for emotionally young people like a 20-year-old me.

2) Also, my emotional fuzziness caused me to soften the lines of my arguments even more, because our courtship was deeply word-based and very immature, and I thought everything I said mattered way too much. These days, I wouldn't mince words. For instance: all of Alex's arguments were defensive, shallow, and poorly-structured. And mine were less so!

3) It inspires me that people can change and learn! And stop mansplaining so much!

4) The whole "I would never date a woman who..." prefix is the biggest problem of the whole debate, as Eva rightly pointed out. Because whatever arguments the original author is making about gender, he frames women in terms of his romantic conquests and interests alone. It's not "I only respect people who..." or "I deeply agree with people of the opinion that..." but rather about who he cares to pursue romantically. This immediately infantilizes any women or their opinions as stated, as well as the whole argument. It's like saying, "Dude, I only want to bone chicks who agree with me!" Which is what most dudes I encounter seem to think, with varying levels of intensity, anyway.eliza.e.campbellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00177530384795567880noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3187452893701941054.post-47492404673969488762011-05-10T03:25:43.286-07:002011-05-10T03:25:43.286-07:00Nice to see Talk Talk and The Cure at the top end ...Nice to see Talk Talk and The Cure at the top end of the list even if I would have chosen different LP's by them.

I think that its a great list. So, although I'm sure a lot of people are familiar with this constitution, I just want to bring this up...

In the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article 3 states that
"Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of person."

(Rapists are inarguably violators of this part of the universal constitution.)

Article 8, further states that "Everyone has the right to an effective remedy by the competent national tribunals for acts violating the fundamental rights granted him by the constitution or by law."

It is the government's responsibility, to provide efficient aid to victims of rape, in aborting pregnancy which has been forced upon them, if they choose. Regardless of how "forcible" the act appears to have been. The victim's "security of person" has been more than violated, and not only the American government, but indeed, any government should take responsibility in giving aid in whatever capacity should be required in such a circumstance.Breezahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02078112777286184376noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3187452893701941054.post-10241057566154391822011-01-11T22:43:54.082-08:002011-01-11T22:43:54.082-08:00Well that's a wonderful bit of awesome.Well that's a wonderful bit of awesome.redneckzillahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09795326885795651702noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3187452893701941054.post-89103344374701636362011-01-11T22:01:00.666-08:002011-01-11T22:01:00.666-08:00The article below is the best explanation I have s...The article below is the best explanation I have seen for this particular issue. Especially if you have a really analytical mind, like you obviously do. However, I don’t agree. You have many good points. The fact that men are treated and talked to differently is true.
The reason that any "talk" isn't given the same in relief society as it is in elder's quorum is for the same reason we split into rs and eq. Men and woman are different. Always and forever. That is the way it should be. There are eternal characteristics that come naturally with each gender (and gender of course is also eternal) Now obviously, this isn't to say that every single man and every single woman fits into a cookie cutter of gender attributes. We are speaking generally. With that being said, men are given a far more straight forward approach for a reason. That tends to be what men respond to best. Also, the church actually is cracking down and saying that pornography is NOT just a problem for men. Action is being taken. Relief Society isn’t quite as warm and fuzzy as it might sound sometimes. We get chastened as well. But, you must admit that it is more of a problem for men. (We have more problems with gossip than sex haha) I think this is simply because women don't care about sex as much as men do (in general) women are far too emotional for that to be the focus. Now, to give the boys credit, they do get hit pretty hard all the time. But that is because the problem is getting worse! It isn’t that women aren’t susceptible or that no one thinks they are susceptible. Everyone is susceptible because we are all human.
As far as the whole "general idealization of women in the Church" goes...I don't think it is an idealization. Respect for women in the world is not very high. Yes, women have more rights blah blah blah. I don't care. I'm talking about the way women are treated and viewed. The world's perspective on that is terrible. Women and men are essential for God’s plan. We need each other. I think though that the church wants for its members to understand the special role that women can play in the world.
”Notwithstanding this preeminence given the creation of woman, she has so frequently through the ages been relegated to a secondary position. She has been put down. She has been denigrated. She has been enslaved. She has been abused. And yet some few of the greatest characters of scripture have been women of integrity, accomplishment, and faith.
We have Mary, the very mother of the Redeemer of the world. We have her as the chosen of God, described by Nephi as “a virgin, most beautiful and fair above all other virgins” (1 Ne. 11:15).
She it was who carried the child Jesus into Egypt to save His life from the wrath of Herod. She it was who nurtured Him in His boyhood and young manhood. She stood before Him when His pain-wracked body hung upon the cross on Calvary’s hill. In His suffering He said to her, “Woman, behold thy son!” And to His disciple in a plea that he care for her, He said, “Behold thy mother!” (John 19:26–27).
Crossing through His life we have Mary and Martha, and Mary of Magdala. She it was who came to the tomb that first Easter morning. And to her, a woman, He first appeared as the resurrected Lord. Why is it that even though Jesus placed woman in a position of preeminence, so many men who profess His name fail to do so? –Gordon B. Hinckley “The women in our lives”
I’m not giving you this quote as a “see we are better than you” or anything. That isn’t true. Honestly, I don’t know what else to say. But, I do know that as members we have a lot more knowledge…we are held to a higher standard. It doesn’t matter, man or woman, things like pornography and chastity are a problem. Perhaps if we were more concerned with serving each other and coming closer to Christ than we are about sex there wouldn’t be such a big problem.
Sanctity of marriage is the job of the man AND the woman. That is pretty common knowledge in the church.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04380157476726108005noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3187452893701941054.post-29331837557556035902011-01-06T16:32:20.868-08:002011-01-06T16:32:20.868-08:00I kind of love this. And good on them. But I hear tell (anecdotally, too often) that the ranks of those so fitted out who serve the republic in the livery of Foggy Bottom thin daily. Wouldn't surprise me.

Worse, and more readily discerned, is the latter-day effort to level and to rationalize education for the generality into glorified trade schools à la U. of Phoenix et al. -- led of course by the hegemons manqués currently triumphantly ascendant among the society's capital-concentrating stratum -- which increasingly produces an inferior citizen elector. For the brain required to compose those thumbnails replete with snarky nuance and comprehensive contextualization to have been cultivated systematically only among presumptive members of a designated ruling class might have made a certain wicked sense during epochs in which both learning and governing were the sole business of the affluent and/or the titled; but now, even though it is the case that, among us, the people are more than ever the rulers, if but (as it were) titularly, it is likewise so that the fostering among the electorate of intellects at least serviceably conversant with humane letters, and so capable of keeping up with and informedly assessing political judgments arising from allusive, expressive and analytic capacities such as are evinced in the cables, continues to decay apace.

Horribly true, IMO: those qualities on fitful view in the dumped dispatches that are valued so manifestly by Beam are endangered in our polity, and with them the feat administration of foreign policy, and, perhaps, democracy in and per se. I'd have to agree with Katie: so many things are second rate...except for, perhaps, the professors. I think a lot of the problems arise from the straight fact that it IS a church school. I don't mean to bash either the church or the school, but I think it needs to lend itself to more one or the other. Church or a private higher institution. The meld is just not working. Either we need to take the approach that this is a HUGE part of the Church and vice versa and the schools' policies and procedures (ie, transportation issues) need to be more charitable because as church members it's our responsibility, or they need to approach the subject more as a business and, say, charge per parking pass. EVERY other college chargers it's students per parking pass. If each student starts paying per parking pass, will that free up some funds for other areas? I mean really.
BYU either needs to be MORE church oriented and have more policies based upon chruch policies, OR it needs to just suck it up and run it like a real business.Dana Bradshawhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14973515790101606199noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3187452893701941054.post-46946750716748784322010-11-13T17:43:17.223-08:002010-11-13T17:43:17.223-08:00If you want to go to a school with all the bells a...If you want to go to a school with all the bells and whistles then go to one that doesn't use tithing as it's main income.

I think almost everything about BYU is second rate, except for its professors and thats all I really paid for.Katiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05264866640081399982noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3187452893701941054.post-79865014141873116922010-11-13T09:11:40.760-08:002010-11-13T09:11:40.760-08:00Shoot I say just run for office yourself, well act...Shoot I say just run for office yourself, well actually I think we should start a riot... but thats me.Samhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00476838557620865599noreply@blogger.com
